The Virginia Capital Trail is a dedicated, paved pedestrian and bicycle trail that will connect the Commonwealth's past and present capitals of Jamestown and Richmond along the Scenic Route 5 corridor. Once complete in 2014, the Trail will traverse 50+ miles, four jurisdictions and 400 years rich in history along one of the first inland routes in North America. V-DOT is constructing the Virginia Capital Trail, and currently, 16-miles are complete; .5 in downtown Richmond, 7.5 in Charles City County, 8 in James CityCounty. The next phase to be complete is the Sherwood phase, which will connect the James City County to the Charles City Courhouse phase, and is scheduled to be complete in June of 2013.
The Virginia Capital Trail's Jamestown section spans 12.01 kilometers with a gentle elevation gain of 7.06 meters, offering a paved multi-use path perfect for cycling and walking. This historically significant trail segment follows the scenic Route 5 corridor, featuring interpretive stations highlighting 400 years of colonial history while providing stunning views of the James River.
